Power Raking is the process of removing dead grass and excess thatch from your lawn. We recommend removing thatch in the spring, prior to new growth. Our process involves using a power raking machine, hand raking and lawn surface cleanup/disposal of clippings.
A light layer of thatch promotes a healthy lawn, which is why we do not remove the entire layer of thatch. When a deep dethatching is performed, the roots of the grass can get damaged. Power Raking is important to remove excess thatch and promote a thick and healthy lawn.
How Is Power Raking Done?
Our technicians arrive to your lawn with the power rake machine. Many would confuse the power rake machine with a regular motorized lawn mover. However, a power rake machine has vertical blades instead of horizontal. This allows the machine to pull out the dead grass instead of cutting it. Removing the dead grass leaves more room and nutrients for younger blades to grow. After power raking your lawn, technicians use rakes to gather and bag all the clippings.
What is Thatch?
“Thatch” is a layer of organic matter that accumulates on a lawn around the base of the grass plants. It is a combination of living and dead plant matter including roots and dead and decomposing grass. Thicker layers of thatch can be harmful to your lawn. Excessive thatch reduces the effectiveness of fertilizers, watering, and provides a good habitat for disease and insects. Power Raking removes some of this organic matter layer, however not all of it, as some thatch is beneficial for lawn growth. Thatch layers in the range of 1/4 to 1/2 inch can reduce water loss, soil temperature reductions and increase improve surface resiliency and wear tolerance.
